Church History: From Pentecost to Today

Are you interested in how the Christian world took on its present shape? Have you always wondered how the books of the New Testament came to be? Do you have questions about the Crusades, the Inquisitions, or the 16th century reformations? Would you like to learn more about your fellow Christians from different traditions?

Well, it sounds like you might enjoy taking The Church: From Pentecost to Today a course in Church history that will be offered and taught by the Rev. Dr.  Andrew Bennett. The course will be offered in 2 parts: 1) The Apostolic Age to the Late Middle Ages (September -December 2024) and 2) The 16th century reformations to the present day (January-April 2025). The course will be lecture-based with some videos and field trips to local Ottawa churches.

The Details

Location: St. George's Church parish hall, 415 Piccadilly Avenue (Westboro)

Beginning: Monday, September 16, 2024

Time: Every Monday evening from 7:00-9:00 pm

Tuition: $350.00 per person ($200 for full-time undergraduate students) 

This is made as a payment to St. George's Parish for which you will receive a charitable receipt. There are NO assignments (apart from weekly readings) and NO tests or exams. This is a course offered for the pure joy of learning.

The Course Materials

An anthology of primary source readings will be provided to each student. We will read texts by or about St. Justin Martyr, St. John Chrysostom, Pliny, the Council of Nicaea, Pope Gregory VII, Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Wesley, the Canadian Jesuit Martyrs, William Carey, and others. Students will also be encouraged to purchase books selected from the Penguin History of the Church Series (all available on Amazon in paperback at very reasonable prices) to supplement what is covered in the lectures.

About the Instructor

The Rev. Dr. Andrew Bennett is an ordained Catholic deacon of the Byzantine rite who serves at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian-Catholic Church in Ottawa. He also is Director of Faith Communities at Cardus, a non-partisan Christian think-tank in Ottawa. He holds a B.A Hons. in History from Dalhousie University and a M.A. in History from McGill University as well as a Ph.D. in Politics from the University of Edinburgh. Fr. Dcn. Andrew taught a similar Church history course at St. Augustine College in Ottawa for 5 years.
